Following are the JRI-Poland-sponsored sessions at the upcoming conference. There are many other sessions that also deal with Polish Jewish research. To find out about them, check the Conference's Program Schedule at http://s4.goeshow.com/iajgs/annual/2016/program_schedule.cfm Sunday, August 7th: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 10:30 a.m.-11:45 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What's New in JRI-Poland with Stanley Diamond Since its 1995 founding, there have been two phases of activity for Jewish Records Indexing - Poland, starting with creating indices of records microfilmed by the LDS and then indexing of later years of records in Polish Archives not filmed by the LDS. Phase 3 - introduced one year ago was made possible by the following changes in Polish archival policies and privacy laws. 1) availability of digital record images records - facilitating full extraction of vital records, and the linking of search results to digital images; 2) Polish privacy law allowing access to marriage and death records up to 1935 in Civil Records Offices (USCs). The session will reveal the results of the first year of Phase 3, and will introduce forthcoming major additions to JRI-Poland and show how the "Your Town" pages will be modified to include a much broader range of record sources. 11:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m. in Willow AB ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JRI-Poland Luncheon: Jewish Family in Poland in 19th Century. Debunking Myths with Tomas Jankowski. What made a Jewish family Jewish? Was it multigenerational and patriarchal? Could studying Torah help in arranging a good marriage? How "typical" was your own family? This talk will help you to place your own family's history in a broader context of social and economic changes in Poland over the last two hundred years. Special attention will be paid to distinguishing the common characteristics of the Jewish family in the past. (This luncheon will be 100 percent kosher, and will cost $44, as a result of an anonymous donation to help underwrite the cost of the kosher luncheon. If you are registered for the Conference and have not already registered for the luncheon, the deadline to do so is July 10.) 1:30-5 p.m ~~~~~~~~~~ Share Fair Come to the JRI-Poland table at the Share Fair with your questions about Polish-Jewish research. JRI-Poland volunteers will help answer your questions and let you know how JRI-Poland can help you find your family. 3:15-4:45 p.m. in Cedar A ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JRI-Poland Beginner's Computer Workshop with Roni Seibel Leibowitz and Hadassah Lipsius This hands-on beginner's workshop will explore the JRI-Poland website and allow the participant to practice initiating basic searches in the database. The goal of the session will be to familiarize the researcher with the JRI-Poland search screens and help understand the search results. The workshop will explore narrowing techniques for managing large results and provide hints for effectively using the two stage results screen. Experience using the Internet is recommended, but no experience with the JRI-Poland database is necessary. Note: All participants must have a Jewishgen ID and know their password. To obtain an account please go to Jewishgen.org and register. Monday, August 8 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1:30-3 p.m. in Cedar A JRI-Poland Intermediate Computer Workshop: Advanced Search and Image Links with Roni Seibel Leibowitz and Hadassah Lipsius This hands-on computer workshop presented by the Jewish Records Indexing - Poland (JRI-Poland) team will focus on how to make the most of your JRI-Poland database search. It is geared for intermediate researchers and will provide hints, tips and a strategy to help find that elusive family member hidden on the JRI-Poland database. With actual images of millions of Polish Jewish records now available online from multiple sources and linked from the JRI-Poland search results, the workshop will also focus on how a search of the JRI-Poland online database can connect a researcher with digital images of the record. Note: All participants must have a Jewishgen ID and know their password. To obtain an account please go to Jewishgen.org and register. 4:30-5:45 p.m. in Grand Ballroom D ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Researching Your Galitzianer Family: Working with Vital Records with Mark Halpern A great many Galician researchers have acquired family records from repositories in Poland and Ukraine. Images of many of these records can now be found online. Over the last fifteen years, the work of Jewish Records Indexing - Poland and Gesher Galicia has made these records more readily available to all Galician researchers. This session, sponsored by JRI-Poland, offers an in-depth examination of vital records along with a strategic framework to help researchers in acquiring Galician records to further their research. We will provide a historical perspective covering the regulations that governed Jewish record keeping and how regulations covering civil marriages impacted the legitimacy and surnames of children. Close examination of sample birth, marriage, and death records will reveal the information contained in the records, identify the records having the most genealogical value, and discover surprises found in many of these records. Tuesday, August 9 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3:15-4:45 p.m. in Cedar A JRI-Poland Intermediate Computer Workshop: Advanced Search and Image Links with Roni Seibel Leibowitz and Hadassah Lipsius. (This is a repeat of the Monday afternoon session.) 6-10 p.m. in the Madrona Room - JRI-Poland Board Meeting (for members of the JRI-Poland Board of Directors) Looking forward to seeing you in Seattle, Stanley Diamond, for the Board of JRI-Polnd
