Hi Richard,

There are many options for research.  On Monday night of the conference,  Nancy Adelson will be speaking on : 50
Years of Washington State History.  We have a Jewish Archives at the University of Washington that you can research that has many oral histories of Jews in early Seattle.  Also check out the Seattle Talmud Torah and there is information there about the early days.

My great-grandfather who I believe I mentioned arrived here with his family in 1892-93 and started as a peddler.  He died in 1916 at the Talmud Torah.  I have a wonderful obituary about him, explaining his role there and the love the students had for him.

As I have been away from research for about sixteen years,  I don't know all the people who will be attending the conference from our area,  but there are quite a few.  I will gladly put some resourses together for you and others. I will be at the hospitality desk a couple of days.  I'm sure others there, also will have suggestions on where to get more information.  I will keep looking!

See you at the conference,

Suzanne Weisfield

Subject: [iajgs2016] Seattle Early Jewish Community

My great-uncle, Samuel MATZKIND arrived in Seattle immediately after the San Francisco earthquake and I believe was head of an Orthodox Jewish School for a number of years. He moved on to Aberdeen and opened an optical store, but is buried in Seattle in 1925. His two sons continued the business but had a falling out in the 1940-50 period.  Is anyone aware of who I can contact to learn more about the Jews in early 20th century Seattle and Aberdeen and possibly this family?
